Background

The ICAR-Indian Institute of Soil and Water Conservation (ICAR-IISWC) formerly known as Central Soil and Water Conservation Research and Training Institute (CSWCRTI), Research Centre, Sunabeda, Koraput District in Odisha State was established in June, 1992.

This is the Youngest and Eighth Research Center of ICAR-IISWC, Dehradun to cater the problems of the eco-sensitive tribal region of Eastern Ghats in Agro Eco Region - 12 through undertaking research, development, extension/outreach & capacity building activities in the field of soil and water conservation, water resource development & watershed management.

Koraput Centre

The Eastern Ghats region though bestowed with rich and diversified natural resources, yet suffers from various land degradation problems due to shifting cultivation, deforestation, mining activities and other socio-economic constraints. As per the harmonized data base on land degradation, an area of 17.07 M ha land area is suffering from various forms of land degradation in the Eastern region. Over a period, the research centre has developed number of cost-effective conservation measures for enhancing the productivity of arable and non-arable lands in the region

Mandate

  • To undertake research and develop strategies for controlling land degradation under all primary production systems and rehabilitation of degraded lands in the Eastern Ghats Region (Agro-Eco-region: 12
  • To provide leadership and coordinate research network with State Agricultural Universities (SAU)/ Central Institutions/ NGOs / line State Govt. Departments for developing location specific technologies in the area of soil and water conservation.
  • To impart specialized training in soil and water conservation and watershed management to the stakeholders
  • To develop sustainable production system models through participatory and integrated research approaches
  • To provide consultancy and advisory services in the field of soil and water conservation, water resource development and watershed management

Infrastructure

To accomplish the Research Centre mandates, the centre has newly constructed office building with a library, soil and plant analysis laboratory, museum and conference hall facilities. The Research Centre also has a well laid out research farm of 110 ha area at Maliguda which is about 8 km from the main office for conducting research and demonstrations on resource conservation technologies

Soil Laboratory

Soil Soil Laboratory , Koraput Centre For analysis of soil, water and plant samples, the Centre has a laboratory equipped with modern and scientific instruments.

The equipments like Kjeltak nitrogen analyzer, Spectrophotometer, Flame meter, Yoder apparatus, Guelph Permeameter, Stage level recorders, Multi-slot deviser, etc., are available for supporting the mandated activities of the Research Centre.

The Research Centre also has Class- B Meteorological Observatory for monitoring weather parameters.

Soil, water and plant sample analysis, runoff samples and silt samples from the field plots and watersheds are being analysed for various parameters

Computer and Communication Cell

The Research Centre is equipped with desktop computers and server. All are connected by LAN and Internet facility for the purpose of research and data analysis. The ARIS cell is also equipped with Geographic Information System (Arc View 3.1), Colour Plotter and Global Positioning System (GPS).

Library

The Centre has library facility to cater the needs of Scientific Staff, Trainees, Students, NGOs, Government and other R&D Departments, and other professionals working in the field of soil and water conservation and watershed management in the region.

Museum

The Centre Museum is exhibited with the Status, Problems and Potentials of the Eastern Ghats region along with major achievements of the Research Centre under identified research programme of the Institute. The museum caters to the needs of various stakeholders and visitors including students.

Research

  • Forest soils were found to be inherently less erodible ('K' value of 0.03 to 0.07) compared to shifting cultivation lands (0.15 to 0.21) and village pasture lands (0.07 to 0.21).
  • At 70% probability, the seasonal rainfall prediction for Eastern Ghats High Land Zone of Orissa for Semiliguda, Koraput, Jeypore, Pottangi, Kolab, Nandapur, Lamtaput, Malkangiri, Nawarangpur and Rayagada regions is 1180.63, 999.56, 1814.75, 1129.59, 1943.46, 1006.25, 1590.76, 1070.66, 1159.7 and 775.18 mm, respectively
  • Studies on shifting cultivation; continuously for 5 years revealed that the deterioration in soil quality decreased the organic carbon from 0.97% to 0.42% with 33.2% runoff and average annual soil loss of 34.8 tons per hectare. This in turn reduced the productivity of rice by 19%, fingermillet by 72% and ginger by 50%.
  • To use resources efficiently and enhancing the productivity of crops, Ragi + Redgram intercropping system was more promising and remunerative over traditional cropping system for reducing runoff by 29%, soil loss by 41% and increasing the yield of crops by 76% over farmers practice.
  • Vegetative barrier of Sambuta grass is an eco-friendly and an effective measure for soil and water conservation on sloping arable and non-arable lands and it reduced runoff and soil loss by 64% and increased yield of ragi by 34 % over farmers' practice
  • Multitier cropping systems comprising of ginger and pigeonpea intercropping in papaya and gliricidia on field bunds is effective in reducing runoff and soil loss by 55%, yielding higher returns with improving soil health over traditional mono-cropping of ragi in the region.
  • Jhola Kundi is a low-cost effective water-harvesting technique with depth varying from 2 m to 4 m and a diameter of 3 m and can irrigate 0.5 ha vegetable cropped area during the rabi season. Paddle operated pump locally called Krishak Bandhu pump are being used to lift water. This in turn can enhance the cropping intensity and income significantly and was found to be most promising for the resource poor tribal farmers of the region.
  • Results from Kokriguda watershed have revealed that various conservation measures increased the cropping intensity by 120%, productivity of different crops by 15 to 100% and increased fodder availability significantly apart from reducing runoff and soil loss.
  • Similarly in Lachhaputraghati watershed, due to various soil and water conservation measures, the runoff and soil loss decreased by 31 and 50%, respectively besides increased in ground water table and enhancing productivity of crops. Various livelihood activities in the watershed increased the income level of the resource poor tribal community in the watershed.
